Disclaimer: I do not own Full Metal Alchemist or any of it’s characters, I am merely a fan with too much free time on her hands and indulges in this by writing fan fiction. No profit is being made besides that satisfying of my muses. ^_^
Summary: They believed they didn’t have a home to return home to.
Edward and Alphonse had burned their home to the ground when they left on their journey to become State Alchemists, to learn all they could and to use the military resources to regain what they had lost. They had burnt more than a house though, they had sacrificed their childhood. The house held their memories of their mother; they grew up in that house. Pictures were lost, favourite toys turned to ash… though most importantly – by burning down the childhood home they had ensured that they wouldn’t have a place to return home to.
True, they could always return to visit with Auntie Pinako and Winry, but it wouldn’t feel right to stay for too long. Both of them were busy with their Automail business. Winry would smile sadly, offer them a place to stay but she knew they’d never really take her up on the offer… they wouldn’t allow themselves to settle down until Alphonse had his body back and Edward had his arm and leg.
Roy Mustang understood the metaphor behind destroying their childhood house. He had always silently admired both boys strength, they had a powerful driving force – they were both determined to look forwards into the future, go to any means possible to correct their sins.
They believed they didn’t have a home to return home to, they wouldn’t accept the offers of the Rockbell’s no matter what, but they unconsciously had already found a new home so to speak. They didn’t spend the majority of their time in this home but they returned to it after every mission, every trip, every victory and failure…
It was one of the only two places where they could really just relax for a bit and not worry. The military had become a second home to the two of them, whether they saw it that way or not.
And more importantly, they were safe in this cruddy little home. They didn’t know it but the two boys had earned the loyalty of many of the soldiers with their courage. They had also earned Roy Mustang’s protection… anyone who would mess with them while they were in Central would have to go through the Flame Alchemist himself, and before anyone got to the Flame Alchemist they’d have to go through his loyal band of misfits.
It may not have been the best of places, nor the best home – but it was a safe one.
